Thirty-five years after founding Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru searched for a contrasting location to build his second distillery. He tasted the water from the Nikkawa river in Miyagi and immediately decided to build there. Miyagikyo was designed to produce a soft, floral, and elegant counterpart to the heavy, peaty style of Yoichi.

Unlike Yoichi's direct coal-firing, Miyagikyo uses indirect steam heating for its pot stills, allowing for slow, controlled distillation at low temperatures. The resulting single malt is exceptionally pure, boasting gorgeous notes of fresh apples, pears, blooming flowers, and a sweet, sherry-influenced elegance.
